Orientation

Nusa Penida is an island located southeast of Bali that remains quite untouched. While you won’t come across fancy beach clubs, organic cafes, or trendy dining spots, it is home to some of the most stunning and picturesque views in Bali.

The local Balinese often refer to Nusa Penida as the island of black magic. Before it became famous for its stunning landscapes, the island was thought to be home to dark spirits exiled there by Bali’s priests. Despite this somewhat ominous reputation, Nusa Penida holds significant religious importance. This is rooted in Bali’s spiritual beliefs, emphasizing the need for balance between good and evil in the universe. Today, Nusa Penida is celebrated for its breathtaking attractions like Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong, and Broken Beach.

One of the most convenient ways to explore the area is by renting a motorbike, which typically costs between IDR 80,000 and 100,000 per day. If you prefer a more comfortable option, you can hire a car with a driver for IDR 650,000 a day, allowing you to reach even the hidden gems of the island, and it can accommodate up to four passengers.

The climate on our island resembles that of Bali, featuring both dry and wet seasons that occur during the same times of the year. The wet season spans from January to April, while the dry season lasts from May to December. Thankfully, the weather does not impact the visibility of our magnificent marine creatures like Manta ray, which can be spotted throughout the year at Manta Point and Manta Bay dive sites. On the other hand, Mola mola are seasonal visitors, appearing only from mid-June to mid-October.

The primary currency used here is the Indonesian rupiah. While there are a few ATMs in Toyapakeh village and Sampalan, it’s a good idea to bring some cash from the Bali mainland. Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, but having cash on hand is useful for small purchases and tips. Internet access is generally decent only in the capital, so we suggest getting a local SIM card from the “my IM3” provider for improved reception. You’ll find Wi-Fi available in most hotels and restaurants, including at the Legend Diving Dive Center.
